On October 31, 2017, a group of pro-active Political Science students of MGIMO-University in Odintsovo created a discussion club ambitiously named “Public Administration in a Comparative Perspective: Discussion Club”.
The Club was designed as a political science “proving ground” for students’ research and analytical work.
A group of freshmen Political Science students Alexander Burba, Daniil Novikov and Elisabeth Klimenko received invitations from the International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS) to make their presentations “Migration Inside and Outside the Post-Soviet Space in the Context of Globalization: Tendencies and Perspectives» and «The Agreement between Russia and China about the Shortening of Illegal Migration» at the Paris World Congress of Political Science Students “Globalization And Diversity”.
The IAPSS World Congress 2018 - an exciting academic and social event with a broad range of high profile scholars and experts - was held in Paris on April 24-27, 2018.
It brought together 24 student panels, 100 panelists and has provided international political science students with the unique opportunity to make remarks and presentations and discuss their research papers in political science, international relations and related sub-fields with an international audience including experts from academia, NGOs, the media and policy-makers. With a truly international audience which crosses all sub-disciplines of political science and international relations, the IAPSS World Congress is a unique event for individual academic learning, vivid debate and networking.
IAPSS World Congresses are the largest annual events organized by the International Association for Political Science Students.
This year the Congress has brought together more than 250 students of political science and related disciplines from all over the world. The Congress dealt with a topic corresponding to the IAPSS Annual Theme for 2018 – “Diversity and Globalization”. The Theme is based on the assumption that we live in a diverse and increasingly globalized world. Its complexities have become evident during several major political changes in the last few years. For example, after the breakdown of the bipolar world and the short period of predominance of the United States in international relations, the world order has become much more fluid and dynamic. Several unstable regions and relationships between states and other international actors initiate questions on the transformation of the so-called Westphalian model. New conflicts appear to be on the rise, including in wholly new environment, such as the cyberspace, while in Europe but also in other regions throughout the world debates are ongoing on deeper integration versus differentiation or even breakdown of existing integration mechanisms.
MGIMO-Odintsovo students engaged in discussions in full swing from the very first day (International Association for Political Science Students).
Lisa Klimenko made a presentation “The Agreement between Russia and China about Reduction of Illegal Migration”, which raised special interest and provoked a heated discussion.
The second and the third days devoted to “Gender policy and Equality”, “Regional Perspectives of Globalization: the Case of Asia and Brazil”, “Integration and Unification: Europe and Germany” and “Rising Popularity of Extreme Right Organizations: a Result of Globalization?” turned to be no less productive for the MGIMO participants.
On the fourth day Lisa Klimenko, acting as moderator and discussant, found herself in the middle of heated discussion pertaining to the transportation of Russian energy resources to Europe and China.
No less successful was the presentation made by Alexander Burba and Daniil Novikov “Migration Inside and Outside the Post-Soviet Space in the Context of Globalization: Tendencies and Perspectives».
A big number of international students participating in the IAPSS World Congresses got interested in attending International Summer School 2018 which will be held at MGIMO-University in Odintsovo this June and July. The two Modules of the School will be devoted to the Russian Foreign and Energy Policy & International Energy Cooperation.
