Zvi Magen is Senior Research Fellow at the Israel Institute for National Security Studies, he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Israel to Ukraine (1993–1997) and Russia (1998–1999). From 1999 to 2006 he served as head of the «Nativ» organization and from 2006 to 2009 he was Head of the Institute for Eurasian Studies at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya.
Zvi Magen gave a talk to students on «The Present and Future of Russian-Israeli Relations,» during which he related the history of bilateral relations and analysed current trends, highlighting the political and social role played by immigrants from countries of the former Soviet Union.
The guest reviewed the different factors, which have an impact on the two countries’ political relations and briefly commented on the problems of the region, particularly Russia and Israel’s attempts to resolve the Syrian conflict and the Iranian issue.
Prior to the lecture, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov greeted the guest. The meeting was attended by the Israeli Ambassador to Russia Harry Koren and the Director of the Israel Institute in Washington, Ariel Roth. On MGIMO’s side, Vice-Rector Artem Malgin and the Director of the School of Business and International Proficiency Angelika Mirzoyeva participated in the meeting, commenting on the positive outcomes of the course held at MGIMO for the second time. The sides agreed to expand their cooperation in education.
The course «Modern Israel», jointly implemented by the Institute of Israel and MGIMO’s School of Business and International Proficiency, and sponsored by the Genesis Philanthropy Group, took place this year between February 18th and May 27th. Upon completion of the course, students were awarded a certificate.
